Earlier this week I attended the reception at the Turkish Embassy Residence in London, marking the 104th anniversary of 30 August Victory Day and Turkish Armed Forces Day.

The evening was hosted by Ambassador Osman Koray Ertaş and Colonel Özgür Dündar, and brought together diplomatic missions, business, press and civil society. It opened with a minute’s silence for the fallen and for those who lost their lives in the shipwreck off Kyrenia.

The relationship between Türkiye and the United Kingdom now rests on a broader footing than at any point I can remember. Trade between the two countries reached £28.4 billion in the four quarters to the end of 2025, up 4.3 per cent on the year, and talks on an enhanced free trade agreement are continuing.

Evenings like this do not come round often. Standing in that room, among people who have built lives and businesses between two countries, I was reminded why I have spent so many years working in exactly that space.

Zafer Bayramımız kutlu olsun.
